Trademark & Intellectual Property Protection: A Legal Guide in Pakistan

Your brand name, logo, software code, and product designs are critical commercial assets. Securing their protection prevents unauthorized use and establishes legal ownership in Pakistan.

Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) of Pakistan

IP registration is managed centrally by the IPO Pakistan, which operates three primary divisions:

  • Trademarks Registry: For brand names, slogans, logos, and packaging designs.
  • Copyrights Registry: For software, books, artwork, video content, and databases.
  • Patents Registry: For novel industrial inventions and manufacturing processes.

Trademark Registration Steps

The trademark registration process involves several milestones:

  1. Trademark Search: Run a search in the IPO registry database to ensure your name or logo does not clash with existing filings.
  2. Filing Application: Submit Form TM-1 along with the logo print and application fee. IPO issues an official filing receipt.
  3. Examination: Registry examiners review the application for distinctiveness. If approved, it is published in the Trademark Journal.
  4. Opposition Period: Third parties have 2 months to file oppositions if they believe your mark infringes on theirs.
  5. Registration: If no oppositions are received, the Trademark Registration Certificate is issued (valid for 10 years, renewable).
